INSTALLATION
* * * * * * * * * *
NOTE: It will be helpful if you have minimal knowledge of basic
DOS commands (e.g. dir, copy, type, print), and if you know how to
change drives and directories. We will try to "walk" you through
all the commands, although you may want to consult your DOS Manual
for additional assistance.

You most likely have acquired LEHIPEDS in one of two ways: you
have received a set of distribution disks; or you have downloaded
the program from a BBS, an on-line service, or the Internet.
INSTALLATION FROM DISTRIBUTION DISKS
The distribution disks will be either ...
1.2MB 5 1/4" Disks (high density)
1.44MB 3 1/2" Disks
Check the files on the distribution disks to be sure there have
been no added or deleted files. This is particularly important if
you have received your disks from a source other than our company.
Check the files by printing the file PACKING.LST which is one of
the files on the distribution disk. This is a listing and short
description of the files that should be on the distribution disks.
Insert Distribution Disk #1 into your floppy drive. Log onto your
floppy drive, usually Drive A or B. Print the file using the DOS
print command "PRINT PACKING.LST" (do not type in the quotes, just
the command). Make sure your printer is on-line before issuing the
print command. Now run the DOS dir command for Disk #1 in the
floppy drive; this will display to screen all the files on the
floppy disk. Make sure these files are included in the print-out
of the packing list. Repeat this procedure for the other
distribution disks.
Now that you have verified you have all the appropriate files,
make back-up copies of your distribution disks. Insert Disk #1 in
your floppy drive and log onto that drive. Issue the command
"DISKCOPY" and follow the prompts. Repeat this procedure for all
the distribution disks. Store your original disks away for
safekeeping and work from the back-up copies.
12
You are now ready to install the program. You should be in the DOS
environment, not Windows. If your computer automatically puts you
in Windows at boot-up, exit Windows into DOS. You should actually
exit Windows rather than "shelling out" with the MS-DOS prompt
command. Check your Windows Manual or help screens if you need
help in exiting Windows.
The installation will create a directory "PEDBASE" off the root
directory of your hard drive. Within the PEDBASE directory,
several subdirectories will be created.
****************************************************************
THIS DIRECTORY STRUCTURE IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY FOR THE PROGRAM
TO RUN PROPERLY. DO NOT ALTER THIS DIRECTORY STRUCTURE UNDER ANY
CIRCUMSTANCES!
****************************************************************
To start the installation process insert Disk #1 in your floppy
drive. Log onto the A Drive (or the B Drive if this is your floppy
drive) and enter the dir command to display the files on this
disk. Depending on your type of disk, you will find one of the
following install programs:
INSTLHD.EXE
INSTL144.EXE
This is the utility program that will create the necessary
directory structure and install LEHIPEDS. Specific default data
files will also be installed.
Let's assume you have 1.2MB installation disks; your install
utility program will be INSTLHD.EXE. To accomplish the
installation, simply enter the command "INSTLHD" and follow the
on-screen prompts.
After the installation is completed, there will be an on-screen
reminders to properly configure your computer. This involves
entering certain commands (ansi.sys driver, buffers, files) in
your config.sys file. For a single user system, we suggest trial
settings of buffers=32 and files=50. Consult your DOS Manual for
help. For a LAN you should at least set files=100. Consult your
LAN Manual for a buffers recommendation. There is also an
on-screen recommendation to make certain files "read-only".
The configuration settings must be in place before LEHIPEDS will
run. These settings are "read" into the computer at boot-up.
Therefore, after you enter the appropriate settings into your
config.sys, you will need to reboot your computer.
13
After rebooting (assuming your configuration settings are
adequate), you are almost ready to run the LEHIPEDS program. You
just need to decide whether you want to run the program from the
DOS command line or from a menu.
*****************************************************************
To make life easier for your employees, we strongly suggest using
a menu system.
*****************************************************************
Log onto the C Drive and enter the command "CD \PEDBASE" (again,
no quotes). This will change you into the PEDBASE directory. The
main executable files to run the various modules are:
LEHIPEDS.EXE
LEHIFIN.EXE
LEHISUR.EXE
LEHIUTIL.EXE
LEHICSTM.EXE
LEHIBAK.EXE
LEHICAID.EXE (registered users in FL)
LEHIMGT.EXE (registered users)
To run any module from the DOS command line, simply enter the name
of the executable file. For instance, to run the main module
enter the command "LEHIPEDS". Usually that's all there is to it.
*************************************************************
TIP: Module won't run? Try the "LOADFIX" or "LLOAD" command.
*************************************************************
If you are using DOS Version 5 or higher, you may need "LOADFIX"
or "LLOAD" to start some of the modules. When attempting to start
a module, you may get an error message stating "packed file
corrupt" or "illegal format in loadable file". You can solve this
problem by typing "LOADFIX" or "LLOAD" before the file name. For
example, assume you get such an error message when attempting to
run LEHIUTIL. In such case type "LOADFIX LEHIUTIL" (no quotes) or
"LLOAD LEHIUTIL" (no quotes) You should only use this command if
necessary because it causes the module to use additional memory.
Refer to the Technical Details section of this manual for
additional information about these commands.
If you plan to run LEHIPEDS from the DOS command line, you are now
all set to use the program in your medical practice. Again, this
is not advisable since you would have to instruct your employees
to carry out a number of DOS commands just to start the various
program modules. Chances are they would find this distressing
and/or confusing. As mentioned above, it would be much easier to
run the program modules from a menu system.
